Now Available -- Never Trifle With Murder (Fresh-Baked Mystery Novel Book 15)

It’s early summer in Weatherford, Texas, and retired teacher/amateur sleuth Phyllis Newsom and fellow retiree Carolyn Wilbarger are taking British cooking classes at the local senior center in this suspenseful Fresh-Baked mystery.

In the latest from Livia J. Washburn, the nationally bestselling author of the Fresh Baked Mystery Series, Phyllis Newsom learns to make a trifle that’s to die for…

While Sam Fletcher is playing dominoes with the guys, Eve Turner is busy flirting with the English chef since she has a fascination for English accents and handsome men who can cook. This puts her in competition with a couple of other ladies from the senior center, who also have their caps set for Chef Alfred Dorrington.

The third and final class features desserts, and more than the stove heats up when the trifle is poisoned! Once again Phyllis finds herself involved in a murder case filled with hidden motives and colorful characters.

Includes recipes!

(It took two long years for me to finish the next Fresh-Baked Mystery Novel. I could bore you with the details, but what's the point in that? Here it finally is, Book 15: Never Trifle with Murder. And let me tell you. That trifle is lethal. (Pictured above.) I'm pretty sure each bite has a thousand calories and the tequila doesn't hurt. I added the short story, "The Coconut Bunny Butt Caper" to the trade paperback, since it was only available digitally.

Now Available -- Death Bakes a Pecan Pie (Fresh-Baked Mystery Book 14)

It’s time for the Harvest Festival again, and Phyllis is determined to bake a killer pecan pie.
Hollywood comes to Weatherford, Texas, as a movie company arrives to shoot scenes for a film based on the novel by Phyllis Newsom’s friend Eve. But movie fantasy turns to deadly reality as a murder recreated for film turns out to be the genuine article, and once more Phyllis has to track down a cunning killer to see that justice is done.
DEATH BAKES A PECAN PIE is the fourteenth novel in the critically acclaimed and best-selling Fresh Baked Mystery series. Phyllis and her friends tackle another complex case with all the humor, camaraderie, good-hearted warmth, and delicious recipes that have made readers around the world fall in love with this series.
Recipes included!

Who knew 14 years ago that Phyllis and Sam would still be sticking their noses into murder? I sure didn't.  I honestly thought their story ended with book 10, but they wouldn't stay quiet.  Thanks to all the fans of this series for keeping their story alive.

Friday the 13th -- BAKER'S DEADLY DOZEN by Livia J. Washburn

Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in the United States. It occurs at least once every year, and up to three times a year. It’s interesting to find that while there is evidence of both Fridays and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of Friday the 13th being especially unlucky before the 19th century. And it’s all where you live, Hispanic and Greek culture find Tuesday the 13th unlucky while it’s Friday the 17th for Italians.

Personally I haven’t found Friday the 13th especially unlucky. We did have someone set a fire in a nearby field on an October Friday the 13th. Luckily my husband and I both worked from home, so we smelled the smoke and were able to call the fire department and then take our shovels and keep it from a neighbor’s house. Seems to me that was a lucky day, though.

This Friday the 13th is another lucky day for me personally. It's the release date of the 13th Fresh Baked Mystery. I am so lucky to be able to continue this series with Baker’s Deadly Dozen.

Baker's Deadly Dozen (A Fresh Baked Mystery) (Volume 13)

Going back to school can be a killer!

Phyllis Newsom and Sam Fletcher come out of retirement to take substitute teacher jobs as a favor for some friends, but they soon realize that the more things change, the more they stay the same. That means getting up early, dealing with students and other teachers, and helping out with extracurricular activities. The problem is, for Phyllis, stumbling over dead bodies is an extracurricular activity!

When murder strikes at the school’s Friday the Thirteenth dance, it’s unlucky not only for the victim but also for the student who’s the prime suspect. Sam’s granddaughter has a crush on the boy and can’t believe he’s a killer. Neither can Phyllis. The police are convinced, though, so the only way Phyllis can help him is to uncover the true identity of the killer stalking the halls of the high school before it’s too late!

EXCERPT

The light downstairs went out before they reached the stairwell. Phyllis frowned. If Mr. McCracken was down there cleaning he should have been moving around enough to keep the light on. Unless he was inside one of the classrooms, then the light might have gone off, she reasoned.
     Then it came on again.
Something about the way things were happening made a chill run down her back. She was at the top of the stairs now, so she stopped and called, “Mr. McCracken?”
A strange sound came from below. It might have been a human groan. Ronnie exclaimed, “What was that?”
     The lights went off again.
“Ronnie,” Phyllis said, “I’m starting to get the feeling that something is wrong. Go back to the cafeteria and find your grandfather.”
“What are you going to do?” Ronnie gestured toward the stairs. “Go down there and see what it is we heard? It might be a . . . a monster!”
     “You don’t believe in monsters.”
“Right now, I don’t disbelieve in them.”

Review of THE GINGERBREAD BUMP-OFF, A Fresh Baked Mystery by Livia J. Washburn

MYSTERY

THE GINGERBREAD BUMP-OFF, A FRESH BAKED MYSTERY BY LIVIA J. WASHBURN

What better way to spend the holiday and winter season than by curling up with a good cozy mystery.  My latest find is The Gingerbread Bump-Off by Livia J. Washburn.  The small town feel and the comradery between four senior citizens sharing a grand old house in Weatherford, Texas, gives this mystery a sense of special warmth.  The cast of characters is four senior citizens, all retired teachers. It’s a unique lifestyle, and they’ve all become the very best of friends. Phyllis owns the house and shares it with “sort of” boyfriend, Sam, Carolyn and Eve.  Much to everyone’s surprise, Eve, seems to have landed yet another “Mr. Right,” and is getting married on New Year’s Eve.  To Read More Follow This Link

Coming -- Black and Blueberry Die

For all my readers that have been asking, yes I am working on the 11th Fresh Baked mystery and hope to have it out by the end of summer. Fingers crossed.
Black and Blueberry Die
In the latest from the nationally bestselling author of The Candy Cane Cupcake Killer, Phyllis Newsom returns with a blackberry and blueberry pie recipe that’s to die for…
It’s late summer in Weatherford, Texas and Mike Newsom’s childhood friend is sweltering in prison for a crime he claims he didn’t commit, murdering his wife. So instead of asking his mother to please stop investigating a murder, as he usually does, he asks her and Sam to please help his friend.
Danny Jackson, found guilty of beating his wife Roxanne to death at the ritzy hair salon where she works, was sentenced to prison for 30 years. His pleas of innocence fell on deaf ears, so it’s up to Phyllis to find what actually happened. She finds there are a lot of secrets and lies being told, and Roxanne was in the middle of them all.
Though Phyllis doesn’t want to get mixed up in another murder investigation, her son rarely asks for favors, and certainly not favors like this. She has to untangle the lies and comb out the facts to find what happened that dark night.
Includes a yummy black and blueberry pie recipe!

New Release -- The Candy Cane Cupcake Killer by Livia J. Washburn

In the latest from the national bestselling author of Trick or Deadly Treat, Phyllis Newsom returns with a festive Christmas recipe that’s to die for…

‘Tis the season in Weatherford, Texas, and everyone in town is gearing up for the annual holiday parade and tree-lighting ceremony in the town square, where Phyllis Newsom will be serving her much-anticipated candy cane cupcakes. Local rancher Barney McCrory manages to charm one away from her before the ceremony begins. But unfortunately, when the minty confection is finished, so is he.

This isn’t the first time someone has dropped dead after eating one of Phyllis’s treats. But when the paramedics determine the rancher was shot, suspicion swiftly falls on McCrory’s daughter and her husband—who both stand to reap some sweet rewards from his death. Though Phyllis doesn’t want to get mixed up in another murder investigation, something about this case doesn’t sit right with her. With a little help from a tabloid TV news crew, Phyllis must unwrap the truth and restore good cheer to Weatherford before it’s too late…

Includes recipes!

Nice Review of Wedding Cake Killer

Review of Wedding Cake Killer in Kings River Life Magazine

....There are a lot of twists and turns in this book. I tried to figure out who did it but then settled back and enjoyed the read instead. There are a number of good suspects which include Roy’s former victims. It’s nice to read a book where the characters are retirement age, still active and involved in the community and still falling in love....

Wedding Cake Killer came out in mass market paperback last month.

Now Available in Mass Market Paperback -- Wedding Cake Killer by Livia J. Washburn

Wedding bells will be ringing in Weatherford, Texas, this Christmas when Phyllis Newsom opens up her home for her best friend’s wedding. And although the bride is wearing white, no one suspects that she’ll soon be wearing black....

After all the planning—and the cake tasting—the big day has finally arrived. Eve Turner, one of Phyllis’s boarders—and her best friend—is moving out and getting married to the affable Roy Porter. While she’s sad to see Eve go, Phyllis is more than happy to host the event in her home and to bake the bride and groom a delicious three-tiered coconut wedding cake. Even though a snowstorm in the forecast seems like a recipe for disaster, the day runs as smoothly as buttercream.

But the marriage doesn’t last long past the honeymoon. When Roy’s found dead at a Weatherford bed-and-breakfast, Eve’s the top suspect. Now Phyllis must find out who iced Roy before her friend finds herself behind bars….

I've been blown away by the reviews.  It has 25 reviews on Amazon and they're all 4 or 5 stars.

A Little Irony

Since I finished For Whom The Funeral Bell Tolls, it was time to return my research books on the Florida Keys to the Fort Worth Library.  One book didn't make to to the library.  We started out with seven books, but only arrived with six.  The book we couldn't find was A Hidden Florida Keys & Everglades.  And hidden it was.  We looked all around the seat, no book. We thought it must have fallen out at one of the places we stopped earlier.  Retracing and asking brought no results.  That sucker was hidden very well.  It wasn't until I was sitting in my chair at home that I remembered a click in the seat earlier.  A flashlight revealed the little trade paperback had slid between the drawer under the passenger seat and the seat.  I was only able to see it with a flashlight.  Fingers wouldn't reach.  It required a small grabber slid between the drawer and seat and lots of maneuvering to get it out.  Mystery solved.  A Hidden Florida Keys & Everglades was no longer hidden.  Now we'll have to return to the Fort Worth Library sooner than planned, but that's nothing to complain about, more book looking.

For Whom The Funeral Bell Tolls is now available in trade paperback and ebook on Amazon.

The Pumpkin Muffin Murder

Publisher: NAL Trade; Original edition (November 2, 2010)
ISBN-10: 0451231325
ISBN-13: 978-0451231321

This is the fifth book in the Fresh Baked series and on the stands now. Much of the book is centered around Holland Lake Park in Weatherford, Texas. This historical park features two double log cabins built in the mid-1800s. During my research, I discovered that the park where we took our daughters to play when they were young has had major changes. The log cabins are still there, but the old wagon they used to play on is gone and shiny new playground equipment replaced it. I'm sure kids enjoy the new playground, but it was sad to see the old wagon gone. It seems like kids today have less chances to just use their imagination when playing. The research at the park certainly brought back a lot of nice memories even with all the changes. My daughters are both grown now and teachers at our local schools, but I will always remember them sharing bread with the ducks and geese and laughing happily at Holland Lake Park.

She figures that a group of English professors and their spouses will be a low-key, intelligent, and, well, professorial bunch. Unlike some of her trouble-plagued tours, she expects this one to go smoothly. Which, of course, she realizes later, is a sure-fire way to jinx things.

The dead body is that of the festival's organizer- and his wife, Carolyn's friend, falls under suspicion.
